Competency Level 3 – Advanced professional and operational competence with diploma qualification

The Certified Sauna Master (SSB Diploma) program qualifies professionals to assume extended technical, safety-related, and organisational responsibilities within a professional sauna environment.

It represents the official diploma level within the 5-level competency framework of the Swiss Sauna Association and defines operational responsibility for thermal applications.

The diploma certifies verified professional competence in execution, organisation, and quality assurance.

Qualification: Certified Sauna Master (SSB Diploma) – Competency Level 3

Duration: 7 on-site training days and 3 online days

Format: Blended learning (on-site and online training)

Assessment: Written and practical assessments

Target group: Sauna Technicians (Competency Level 2) with practical experience

The program qualifies participants to independently deliver complex sauna and infusion formats in a safe, structured, and high-quality manner.

The goal is the development of a reflective and responsible professional at diploma level.

Graduates at competency level 3 are able to:

  • control fragrance and heat development in a targeted and responsible manner
  • apply physiological principles in planning and execution

Practical

  • design and deliver structured sauna sessions professionally
  • apply different towel techniques safely and effectively
  • adapt to different guest groups in a flexible and appropriate way

Safety and Legal

  • implement safety obligations responsibly within sauna operations
  • identify and minimise potential liability risks
  • manage emergency situations calmly and in accordance with regulations

Organisational

  • consistently implement defined quality standards
  • coordinate sauna operations independently

Sauna fundamentals

  • History and forms of sauna bathing
  • Climate factors (temperature, humidity, air circulation)
  • Structure and function of a sauna facility

Sauna technology

  • Types of sauna heaters and heating systems
  • Control systems and safety mechanisms
  • Materials used in sauna environments

Towel techniques

  • Fundamentals of manual towel techniques
  • Body posture and movement patterns
  • Control of heat distribution and air circulation
  • Practical exercises

Basic medical knowledge

  • Physiological effects of heat
  • Physical stress responses of the body
  • Contraindications
  • Fundamentals of emergency prevention

Legal framework

  • Responsibility in sauna operations
  • Safety and duty-of-care obligations
  • Foundations of liability

Marketing in sauna operations

  • Positioning of sauna infusion offerings

Essential oils and application

  • Properties and quality differences

  • Written examination
  • Practical diploma assessment (structured sauna session)
  • Successful completion leads to recognition of competency level 3 within the SSB education system.

  • No formal admission requirements are defined.
  • Active participation, independent preparation, and completion of assessments are expected.

It forms the basis for further development towards competency level 4 (Team Leader Sauna & Thermal Operations).

The international edition of this program is planned for 2027.
